Sports Roundup XIV
Sara Courtney
Where we’re going, and where we’ve been, in sports.
This past week:
Hope springs eternal, as they say, and the surest sign of that are all the spring sports gearing up for the season. Coming off of a long spring break, there are no games to report on yet, so instead we share photos and notes from the teams spring training trips to Florida.
- Boys Varsity Lacrosse Coach Michael Webster had 41 players and 5 coaches at the HoganLax team training facility in Orlando. The team scrimmaged against Milton Academy from Massachusetts, who's Assistant Coach, Corey Simonson, was a Pingry Lacrosse Captain in 1997.
- Girls Varsity Lacrosse Coach Carter Abbott took the team of 35 athletes down to Tampa where they practice, played several scrimmages, and squeezed in that all-important beach time—and a few 7 Eleven runs.
- Varsity Softball player Taylor Francis '25 called the spring break training trip a success. "We ended with a winning record, going 3-2 and had incredible bonding moments as a team! We were able to get to know our newest players and made everyone really pumped for the season! It was a really great way to test the waters and experiment with players in different positions and also help players become more confident and comfortable working together as we have our opening day next Tuesday against Gil. It allowed us to recognize our strengths and where we need to improve. We all became closer as a team. One of the memorable moments that stood out to me was after our last scrimmage of the trip. We celebrated Coach Chip's 25th year at the ESPN complex. We are the only team that has achieved this milestone. It was a really fun way to wrap up the trip and be congratulated by Mickey Mouse." And when it comes to her expectations for the season, Taylor is excited. "We have a great group of returning players and new freshman talent with a lot of experience that will have a meaningful impact on the team."
- And Varsity Baseball Coach Anthony Feltre notes the team had 24 players go to Orlando this year. In addition practices and playing three scrimmages, the players took in the sights at Universal Studio Theme Parks and Volcano Bay for a Celebration of Athletes Event.
Coming up:
- The season officially kicks off today, with Boys Varsity Baseball, Boys Varsity Lacrosse and Boys JV Lacrosse, as well as both Boys and Girls Golf Teams competing later this afternoon.
