Mumblings and Musings

Sophie Pateyuk ’28 collects the offbeat musings found only at Pingry

Every school has its own language, but Pingry seems to have developed an entire dialect. From Monday Morning Meetings to whatever is currently happening in the Engel Dining Room, certain jokes and phrases make absolutely no sense unless you were there. For example, after the recent phishing warning, we were reminded not to click weird dinner invite links, especially when the IP address is accompanied by the deeply concerning phrase “Whale gooners.” Somehow, that is now part of the Pingry vocabulary. And then there’s the ongoing Dress-Code lore, including Mr. Hoepfl’s memorable reminder that “leggings are welcome to everybody.” Out of context? At Pingry? Somehow completely understandable.

Then came the soft-serve ice cream. For three days straight, soft serve appeared at lunch, and everyone quickly became accustomed to this new level of luxury. Then, on day four, it disappeared. No soft serve. Just fruit. The collective disappointment was honestly not surprising. These are the tiny moments that become inside jokes, phrases, and stories that only make sense if you were there. “Heard Around Campus” is our new place to collect them. If you hear a phrase, joke, or oddly specific Pingry moment that deserves to live on, fill out the Google Form at the bottom of this page. We’ll also send it around the school so everyone can contribute to the growing archive of things that make absolutely no sense outside of Pingry.
