Relational Teaching

For teachers, the integration of generative AI at Pingry is guided by our deep commitment to relational teaching. We recognize that the most impactful learning happens within the context of trust, empathy, and authentic connection between educators and students. AI can be a powerful tool to support instruction, personalize learning, and reduce administrative burdens, but it must never replace the human presence at the heart of great teaching. As educators, we are called to use AI thoughtfully, in ways that enhance our ability to see, know, and support each learner as a whole person. At the same time, we guide students in developing their own AI literacy, helping them use these tools responsibly to support their learning, maintain their authentic voice, and uphold the values of the Honor Code.

What is relational teaching?

Relational teaching develops strong, authentic relationships between teachers and students to create the conditions for learning, intellectual risk, emotional development, and sustained engagement of mind, body, and spirit. It goes beyond simply delivering content and focuses on the human connection as a foundation for effective teaching and learning.

Key Characteristics of Relational Teaching

Younger Grades = concrete, playful, highly guided, teacher presence first.
Middle Grades = exploratory, critical thinking, structured reflection.
Upper Grades = independence, voice, ethical responsibility, and deeper analysis.
