With a new Head Coach and a number of younger players joining the roster, Big Blue is looking to improve on their second-place finish at the Group State Championships last spring.

Last spring was replete with broken school records in both track and field events—not to mention the girls' team narrowly missing a podium finish at the NJSIAA Non-Public A Championships—will their success continue this season?

Big Blue Beat: Girls' Varsity Golf Team

By Madeline Skapper '20

Head Coach: Rob Mauer

Last season's highlights: Led by captains Christine Shao '19 and Ami Gianchandani '18—now playing for Yale University—the 2018 Girls' Varsity Golf Team had an extremely successful season, finishing with a perfect season record of 17-0 and sweeping all championship tournaments, including the Skyland Conference Championships, Somerset County Championships, and the Red Devil Tournament. To cap off their achievements, they also won the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions, marking their second consecutive team appearance at the state-wide event (they placed second last year) and first overall win since 2004. Ami and Christine both shot 2-under 70 to lead the team (Christine took third via match of cards and Ami took fourth), and Zara Jacob '21 (79) and Ashley Lu '20 (80) finished 14th and 17th, respectively.

What to watch for this season:
• Led by captain Christine Shao '19, and with many returning scorers, the team is looking forward to another successful season, and to defending their many titles.

• Coach Mauer, who is beginning his fifth season as Head Coach, wants to emphasize the short game this season, as most of the scoring comes from pitching, chipping, and putting.

• Preseason practices began on March 1, and the season opener against Peddie is scheduled for April 1.

Full-court press:
"This year will be a very strong one with three of top four scorers returning this year, as well as new talent joining the team. I believe this team has as much energy and enthusiasm to do just as well this year as last. We need to work on getting in the correct mindset for the big tournaments and our goal is to have another winning season and sweep all the major championships."—Head Coach Rob Mauer
