All five of Pingry's flights advanced to the semifinals, three reached the finals, and two emerged victorious on Saturday, leading the Girls' Varsity Tennis Team to become 2018 Somerset County Tournament Champions. Big Blue finished two points ahead of Bridgewater-Raritan.
Freshman Sarah Kloss won at second singles (7-5, 6-3) and Nicole Kloss '19 and Caeley Feeney '21 won at second doubles (6-4, 7-5) to lead the team. In third singles, Gabby Billington '20 advanced to the finals, and Gia Graziano '21 made it the semifinals in first singles, falling to the tournament's eventual winner, from Montgomery. In first doubles, Allie Matthias '19 and Lily Schiffman '20 lost to Montgomery in the semifinals.
"We had tough matches on all of the courts," Head Coach Marion Weber told NJ.com on Saturday. "I think everybody played really well. The girls held it together and played smart tennis." She added, "It was a great team effort and win for Pingry!"
The team last won counties in 2016, when it tied with Ridge. Last year, they finished third at counties, second in the Prep A Tournament, and rounded out the season by clinching their second consecutive NJSIAA Non-Public A South victory.
Congratulations, girls' tennis!
