Coping with an unpredictable illness, Joei has learned to appreciate the lessons life has to offer.
Big Blue took to the court in the days following the Christmas holiday, as the girls' and boys' varsity teams showcased their promise in early season holiday tournaments.
In the first round of the Prep Holiday Tournament on December 28, which matched Pingry against Oratory Prep, the boys' team (1-5) was led by Channing Russell '18, who scored 14 points, and co-captain Phito Jean-Louis '18, who scored 13 points. Despite their efforts, Big Blue fell to the Rams, 52-39. In a consolation game the following day, they were edged out by Newark Academy, 47-36, but not before co-captain Mike Weber '18 netted 14 points and Shane Shannon added 10.
On the girls' side, Kelsey Ransom '20 scored a team-high 18 points and Oliva Volpe '21 added 11 in the first round of the Len Sepanak Tournament at Ridge on December 27. They couldn't hold off Mendham, however, and lost 50-39. Rallying the next day, the team—led again by Ransom with 27 points, eight rebounds, and eight steals—defeated Union, 63-36. Captain Megan Horn '18, who reached 1,000 points last winter as a junior, hit five 3-pointers in the victory, finishing with 21-points total. Olivia finished with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
In their fifth-place game on December 30, Big Blue (4-2) clinched a 58-50 victory over Edison. As MyJerseyCentral.com reported, Kelsey "continued her early-season roll, posting 21 points, 15 rebounds, and six steals. . . the sophomore has at least 18 points in each of her team's six games [so far this season], with five outings of 20 points or more, four double-doubles, and a triple-double." She has averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds per game. In the same game against Edison, Megan contributed 14 points and Alyson Feeley '20 captured a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Head Coach of the Girls' Varsity Basketball Team Courtney Tierney commented on their performance in the tournament: "The girls put up a hard-fought battle in the first game against a tough Mendham team. Playing without Alyson Feeley '20 and Aly Pyne '18, Aly Hosler '19 and Hope Maultsby '21 stepped up to the challenge, and played big roles for us in the second game as well. In the final game against Edison, the girls showed a lot of toughness and came back from being down by eight in the third quarter. It was a tremendous team effort with Megan [Horn] making some key assists, Kelsey [Ransom] overcoming foul trouble to pull down 15 rebounds, and Olivia [Volpe] hitting a big three-pointer to put us ahead and seal the game with two free throws."
Congratulations, Big Blue basketball!
