Music, poetry, and prose celebrated the achievements of black Americans.
On June 3, Juventus F.C.—known as "Juve" by its fans—a professional soccer club based in Turin, Italy, competed against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Finals in Cardiff, Whales. Aside from a World Cup Final, an appearance in the Champions League finals is considered by many to be the capstone of professional soccer.
Seven weeks later, on July 21—and on the heels of a visit from the Costa Rica National Team—Juventus took to the Miller A. Bugliari '52 World Cup Soccer Field. Competitors in the 2017 International Champions Cup (ICC), they were practicing at Pingry in advance of their match against Barcelona, which took place at MetLife Stadium.
While their practices were closed, the team, which includes Italian national Gianluigi Buffon, German midfielder Sami Khedira, Argentine goalscorer Gonzalo Higuain, and Croatian star Mario Mandžukić, signed autographs for several Pingry campers who stood eagerly nearby. Juventus, which lost 2-1 to Barcelona on July 22, continues its competition in the North American edition of the ICC through the end of the month. They hope to secure their sixth consecutive Italian Serie A title this season.
