Endowed Funds

The Albert W. Booth Master Chair Faculty Endowment Fund was established in 1993 to honor one of Pingry’s beloved master teachers, Albert “Albie” Booth, whose Pingry career spanned 64 years. The Booth Fund provides an award every year to a faculty member from any department who has taught at Pingry for at least five years and who reflects those qualities of honor, integrity, idealism, dedication to students, and reverence for scholarship that defined Mr. Booth’s life and work.

The Booth Chair is currently held by Devan Zadrozny and Jay Winston.

Mr. Booth, who taught Latin from 1929 to 1993, was Pingry's second-longest-serving employee and is one of the most revered teachers in School history—so admired, in fact, that he is the only faculty member whose portrait is included among the portraits of former Heads of School in the C.B. Newton Library. Teachers who worked with him and students who learned from him recall Mr. Booth as a master of his subject who demanded excellence from his students and went out of his way to help them. In 1962, he received the Princeton Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching in New Jersey.

Former students recall his sense of drama that was reminiscent of a Roman orator. “He was a character because of his bombastic teaching style,” said former student and Honorary Trustee Bill Engel ’67. “You’d be laughing as he yelled at you for a stupid mistake—it got your attention. He made certain you learned the subject and was always thinking of ways to help make students better people.”

Former Director of Studies Lydia Geacintov said that, for Mr. Booth, teaching “was not only a vocation, but also an avocation, and Latin was a ‘way of life.’”

The David B. Buffum Faculty Chair Endowment Fund was established in 1998 by Henry H. Hoyt, Jr. ’45. The Buffum Chair is awarded every three years to an outstanding faculty member in the Pingry History Department who embodies Mr. Buffum’s dedication to and love of education and history at Pingry.

The Buffum Chair is currently held by Hannah Decatur.

Mr. Buffum taught history, French, and public speaking from 1926 to 1960, and helped organize the library’s reference section. In 1951, the faculty and Board of Trustees honored him for his “talents and personal charm and high standards of scholarship and decorum.” Henry H. Hoyt, Jr. ’45, who established this chair, called him “the best teacher I had in high school or college.” Mr. Buffum is also remembered as brilliant, strict, inspiring, and humorous, and for his ability to make history fun.

The Edward G. Engel Chair for Math and Science Endowment Fund, The Pingry School’s first endowed Chair, was established in 1989 by Mr. Engel ’33 and his wife Patricia through a Charitable Lead Annuity Trust created in 1984. First awarded in 1990, the Engel Chair provides an annual award for a three-year period to a faculty member in the disciplines of mathematics or science. The recipient should also make a significant contribution to the life of the School outside of the classroom.

The Engel Chair is currently held by Mary Sartorio.

This chair reflects Mr. Engel's lifelong interests in math and science. With an engineering background, he cared about precision, methods, analysis, and organization. Mr. Engel became President of Georgia Kaolin Company and was known for being a kind, caring leader. “He was gracious, honest, and intellectually curious, and always treated everyone with the utmost respect,” said Mike Taranto ’59, who worked at the company for three decades. “I once reported to him on a project that was going badly because I had a lot to learn. Ed walked me through it and didn’t make me feel badly. He was empathetic and unpretentious.”

Established in 1986 in honor of E. Murray Todd ’16, this award is given to a faculty member from any department who has taught at Pingry for at least five years and who has shown extraordinary dedication to his/her students.

The Todd Faculty Chair is currently held by Brad Poprik.

A talented long-distance runner, Pingry trustee, and Letter-in-Life Award recipient, Mr. Todd, Class of 1916, was committed to education and had deep respect for excellent teachers. Pingry’s track and E. Murray Todd Mile are also named for him (the Todd Mile, first held on May 12, 1984, dedication day for the new campus, was a Reunion Weekend event for runners in the Pingry community). This chair was established by a gift from his estate when Pingry was creating endowed funds to support faculty.

The Woodruff J. English Faculty Endowment Fund was established in 1996 to honor the memory of Mr. English ’27, a distinguished Pingry alumnus, by his family. First awarded in 1997, the English Fund provides an award each year to two Pingry faculty members who, in addition to embodying the spirit of the Honor Code personally and reflecting and instilling the Code’s ideals in their interactions with others, instill the love of learning for learning’s sake and have a commitment to living the Honor Code’s ideals for the intrinsic worth and not for their own personal gain.

The English award was most recently presented to David Gonzalez and Ramsay Vehslage.

Mr. English ’27, one of many members of his family to attend Pingry (including his father Conover, Class of 1894; brother N. Conover ’29; nephew Sherman ’71; and sons Woodruff ’63 and Barton ’68), was a prominent attorney who guided the development of New Jersey’s oldest and largest law firm, McCarter & English. Like the rest of his family, Mr. English was considered an honorable, upstanding individual, hence the designation of this chair to a faculty member who embodies the spirit of the Honor Code, both personally and professionally.

“He had a very good sense of right and wrong, and did the best for his clients in an efficient, thoughtful way, maintaining a high level of integrity,” said Honorary Trustee Jack Brescher ’65, a Partner at McCarter & English since 1982. “Even today, we ask ourselves, ‘What would Woodruff say about this decision?’” Mr. Brescher also noted that, in the early 1970s, Mr. English was already committed to hiring women and people of color; in fact, one female associate became the first female justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court.

The Greig Family Endowed Faculty Chair was established by Thomas G. and Mary M. Greig III, Thomas G. Greig IV ’94, David E. Greig ’98 and Sarah O. Greig, and Andrew W. Greig ’00 and Lauren (Washychyn) Greig ’00. The Greig Chair is awarded, for a period of up to three years, to a faculty member who has been at Pingry for at least five years in recognition of his/her excellence in both teaching and coaching of a sport. The intent is to honor those teachers who best exemplify the Pingry philosophy of educating students both in and out of the classroom. The award should not only recognize exceptional teaching, but also reward those teachers who dedicate themselves as a coach in the Upper School, with a preference for a head coach, but who may coach in any capacity, including as the head coach of a sport in the Middle School.

The Greig award was most recently presented to Jeff Patten.

Some of the Greig family’s best memories at Pingry may be traced back to teachers who also coached them in a sport. This personification of the country day school philosophy is so important to the Greig family that they endowed a chair for a teacher-coach.

The Herbert F. Hahn Junior Faculty Fellowship encourages young, experienced teachers to stay in teaching. Dedicated to the memory of master teacher Herbert F. Hahn, the Fellowship provides an annual award for up to three years to two faculty members with five to 15 years of teaching experience in recognition of good teaching, the successful performance of multiple extracurricular responsibilities, and other informal efforts with Pingry students. The intent of the award is to not only reward good teaching, but also to recognize those teachers who best personify the Pingry philosophy.

The Hahn award was most recently presented to Chao Wang and Julia Featherman.

During his Pingry career from 1944 to 1981, Dr. Hahn taught English, philosophy, and religion and authored the book The Beginning of Wisdom, the history of Pingry’s first 100 years, published in 1961. In 1971, he received the Princeton Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching in New Jersey. Dr. Hahn was known for his ability to convey authority through a calm demeanor, and for making students aware of subtleties in the texts they studied.

Former student and Honorary Trustee Bill Engel ’67 describes Dr. Hahn as old-fashioned, with the utmost concern for his students. “He was soft-spoken, with a deep, melodic voice. He sounded like a sage—like the ‘voice of wisdom,’ and he got you to think with him.”

In 1967, Dr. Hahn wrote that liberal education should train minds and enlarge hearts in such a way that young people “will know something of the world in which they are growing up, understand something of its manifold complexity, and function effectively in their dealings with people in whatever aspects of the world’s work they choose to center their careers.”

The Ittycheria Recursion Teaching/Learning Endowment Fund was established in 2016 by Dev and Anju Ittycheria to provide faculty and staff the opportunity to learn how to better incorporate the use of code into their everyday teaching environment.

The James P. Whitlock, Jr. ’60 Faculty Development Fund for Science, Mathematics, and Technology was established in 2005 by Dr. James P. Whitlock, Jr. ’60. The Fund recognizes outstanding teachers in the disciplines of natural sciences, mathematics, and technology by providing, on an annual basis, a salary bonus to one Pingry faculty member for exceptional teaching accomplishments in these fields.

The Whitlock award was most recently presented to Jeff Feinberg.

Dr. Whitlock, who spent 25 years in teaching and research in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology at Stanford University Medical School, established this fund to reward excellence in teaching science, math, and technology. As he explained at the time, “Many Americans lack adequate understanding of math, natural science, and technology, and I want to provide a way to reward Pingry faculty for outstanding accomplishment in teaching these subjects. Understanding science and technology is critical to making informed decisions that affect our future. I want to show my appreciation for Pingry faculty who foster scientific literacy and who creatively integrate math, natural science, and technology in their classrooms.” He believes that innovative teachers maintain excellence in education, and that those who integrate these particular subjects at an earlier age help reduce students’ future anxiety about them.

The Program ensures the effectiveness of Pingry's faculty through continued professional stimulation and development.

The John Hanly Fund for Faculty Development was established in 1996 in honor of former Head of School, John Hanly to provide financial support for faculty study grants with a commitment to innovative thinking and a dedication to sustaining the intellectual excitement, vitality, and energy of Pingry’s academic community.

Created to honor the legacy of John "Mags" Magadini as the head coach of Varsity Boys' Ice Hockey from 1996 to 2016.

The Murti Faculty Fund was established in 2018 by Arjun and Rita Murti P '21 to provide support for professional development opportunities.

The N.R. Leavitt Faculty Endowment Fund was established in 1991 by the N.R. Leavitt Foundation to provide general faculty support to the School.

The Norman B. Tomlinson, Jr. ’44 Chair for History and Literature Faculty Endowment Fund was established in 1989 by Mr. Tomlinson. The Tomlinson Faculty Fund provides an annual award to a humanities faculty member who is chosen as the recipient for a period of three years. The recipient must have taught at Pingry for at least five years and have made a significant contribution to the life of the school outside of the classroom.

The Tomlinson Chair is currently held by Margi Dillon.

Mr. Tomlinson ’44, a Pingry trustee from 1991 to 1996, an Honorary Trustee from 1996 to 2017, and Letter-in-Life Award recipient, is described as well respected, thoughtful, and unceasingly generous to the School. He established this fund, Pingry’s second endowed departmental chair, to support the faculty, reflect his interests in reading and military history, and acknowledge his indebtedness to great Pingry teachers. Mr. Tomlinson spent his career in leadership positions within the publishing industry, first with The Morristown Daily Record, a newspaper established by his grandparents in 1900, and then with New Jersey Monthly, a magazine for residents of the state.

The PSPA Faculty Endowment Fund was established by The Pingry School Parents’ Association to provide general support for the faculty.

Established in 2000, the Senior Class Faculty Chair recognizes one distinguished teacher, in any discipline, by supporting his/her professional and curricular development in his or her field. Please Note: This Fund is fully funded and no longer accepting additional gifts.

A group of former parents representing the Classes of 1996-2000 established this award during The Campaign for Pingry, the School’s first major capital campaign from 1996-2000. This chair recognizes outstanding teaching at Pingry and helped to fulfill a campaign goal of increasing support for faculty development.

The John & Louisa Ackley Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2003 to provide support to a financially deserving student who is preferably a resident of Rahway, New Jersey. Please Note: This Scholarship is fully funded and is no longer accepting additional gifts.

Established in 1994 by Dr. Abu Alam and Dr. Rozana Alam, the Fund provides assistance to deserving students who might otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Charles Brown Atwater Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 by The Bunbury Company, Inc. in honor of Charles Brown Atwater, a charter member of the class of 1931.

The Stephen Lee Baldwin ’58 Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 by Mr. Carl J. Kreitler, Jr. and Mr. G. Wade Staniar in memory of Stephen Lee Baldwin ’58. The need-based Scholarship Fund gives preference to a male involved with athletics at The Pingry School.

The Bristol Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Mr. Michal W. Bristol '49. The need-based Scholarship Fund gives preference to minority students and shall not exceed half of the total scholarship awarded to a recipient. Selection is based on leadership potential, academic effort, academic achievement and athletic effort.

The Madeleine Wild Bristol Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Madeleine Wild Bristol. Reflecting Mrs. Bristol’s love of music, the Fund provides a yearly award of $1,000 to a talented Pingry music student and no fewer than two scholarships covering at least 80% of tuition to students in need.

The William McLaren Bristol III, Class of 1939 Leadership Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students in the Upper School who demonstrate a capacity for leadership in some aspect of school life.

The Percy H. Buchanan Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 1992 by Peter T. Buchanan ’52 in memory of his father, Percy H. Buchanan ’12, and assists deserving Pingry students in need of financial aid.

The Jacob and Eugenie Bucky Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Mr. Robert C. Thomson, Jr. ’29 and the Jacob and Eugenia Bucky Memorial Foundation to assist deserving Pingry students in need of financial aid.

The Miller Bugliari ’52 Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 through a challenge grant in honor of Miller Bugliari and the tremendous impact he has had on The Pingry School. The need-based legacy scholarship fund is awarded to qualified students who are children or grandchildren of Pingry alumni. Should no legacy students qualify for financial aid in any given year, funding will be used to assist students of faculty members. Please Note: This Scholarship is fully funded and no longer accepting additional gifts.

A Pingry alumnus, friend and teammate of Herb Busch in football, basketball and baseball has established the Herbert H. Busch, Jr. '55 Memorial Football/Lacrosse Scholarship to provide financial aid to qualified students who have demonstrated need and participate at a high level in football and lacrosse.

The Carr Family Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by the late Margaret Patterson Carr in memory of her father, William Collette Carr, class of 1886, and her brothers, William Collette Carr, Jr. ’23 and Nelson Lovell Carr ’24. The Fund also includes a gift from Mr. Nelson Carr previously designated to the Pingry Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment. The Carr Family Scholarship Endowment Fund provides need-based financial aid to deserving Pingry students.

The Edward Cissel SEEDS Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Mr. John H. Scully ’62 in honor of Edward Cissel ’39 to provide a financial scholarship to one SEEDS Scholar, ensuring his or her ability to attend The Pingry School.

The Class of 1951 Scholarship Fund was established by members of the class to commemorate their 50th reunion. The Fund provides assistance to deserving Pingry students in need of financial aid.

The Nathaniel E. Conard Scholarship was established in 2019 to honor Pingry's 15th Headmaster and his legacy of cultivating a dynamic, diverse, and engaged student body by expanding our Financial Aid offerings and building partnerships with underrepresented New Jersey communities. The scholarship is awarded to deserving Pingry students in need of financial assistance.

The Timothy C. Cornwall '64 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Timothy '64 and enhanced in 1983 by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Cornwall in his honor. The Fund provides need-based scholarships to one or more students in the Upper School, including SEEDS students, who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated qualities of character and scholarship that show promise of enriching life on campus and bringing credit to themselves in later life.

The Theodore M. Corvino, Sr. Scholarship was established in 2019 to honor the Lower School Director who retired after 45 years of service. He is most celebrated for nurturing a culture of inclusion and caring at the Lower School and for his steadfast support of faculty and staff during his tenure. The scholarship is awarded to deserving Pingry students in need of financial assistance.

The Vincent C. DiGiorgio '77 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 in memory of Vincent DiGiorgio ’77. In honor of Vincent’s daughters, the need-based Scholarship Fund gives preference to female students.

The Donald R. Dixon '65 Endowment Fund was established in 2011 by Mr. Dixon to provide financial assistance to deserving Pingry students.

The James R. Douglas ’30 Scholarship Endowment Fund, established in memory of James Douglas ’30, provides need-based financial assistance to a deserving Pingry student.

The Ronald Dreesen ’51 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established through a bequest from the Estate of Mr. Ronald Dreesen, a 1951 graduate of The Pingry School. A wonderful supporter of Pingry, Mr. Dreesen felt strongly that his many successes in life were due to the opportunities he was afforded while at the School. Mr. Dreesen established the need-based scholarship to assist students who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Dunphy Family Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 in order to provide need-based assistance to African American or Hispanic students who may not otherwise be able to attend The Pingry School.

The Joseph G. ’35 and Jane D. Engel SEEDS Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Engel to support one New Jersey SEEDS Scholar attending The Pingry School.

The William V. Engel ’67 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Michael F. O’Neill in honor of William V. Engel ’67 and his dedication and commitment to The Pingry School. The Fund enables students to attend Pingry who would not otherwise know about or be able to obtain an independent school education and who can contribute to the economic and cultural diversity of Pingry. Preference is given to students from a family where neither parent has attended college.

The Frederick G.H. Fayen II Scholarship was established by Dr. John D. Young to honor Mr. Fred Fayen, teacher of humanities and college counsel, for his 45 years of service to Pingry, and who is an unwavering symbol of excellence, dedication, and every positive quality that The Pingry School has stood for since its founding. This Fund also honors Mr. Fayen’s passion for educating the children of faculty and staff by ensuring that admitted faculty and staff children who require financial aid have access to funds that will allow them to attend and continue the Pingry tradition fostered by their parents.

The Edward E. Ford Foundation Scholarship Fund was established through a challenge grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation. The matching funds were raised during fiscal year 1998, and the Fund provides need-based scholarships to students who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The E.J. Grassmann Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 1992 by the E.J. Grassmann Trust to provide need-based financial aid to deserving Pingry students.

The John Hanly Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 1999 to honor the legacy of one of Pingry’s most beloved Headmasters. John’s positive influence on the school is still evident today through our culture of respect for and service to others and our continued commitment to academic excellence, community and a diverse student body. The Fund assists deserving Pingry students in need of financial aid.

The Hayden Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund was established through a matching grant from the Charles Hayden Foundation to provide need-based assistance to deserving students who wish to attend The Pingry School.

The Hetzel Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund was established through the estate of William T. Hetzel ’36. The Fund provides two need-based Memorial Scholarships: one in memory of William, awarded to a male student; and one in memory of his sister, Nathalie, awarded to a female student.

The John W. Holman, Jr. ’55 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in honor of John Holman, Jr. ’55 in recognition of his continued dedication and commitment to The Pingry School. The Fund assists deserving Pingry students in need of financial aid.

The Homestead Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Mrs. Jane Engel in memory of her husband, Joseph '24, to provide need-based financial aid to deserving Pingry students.

The Henry H. Hoyt ’45 SEEDS Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to provide financial scholarships to four SEEDS Scholars, ensuring their ability to attend The Pingry School.

Established in 2022 by the family of Ann Johnson '83, to honor her, and to assist deserving students to attend Pingry. Both a good scholar and athlete at Pingry, Ann always wanted to teach. After, and while, earning four degrees - AB from William & Mary, MFA from Yale, MA & PhD from Princeton - she taught at six colleges: University of Southern California, Princeton, Yale, Fordham, University of South Carolina and Cornell. She also was elected a "Charles Warren Fellow in American History" at Harvard. Ann died from cancer in 2016, while on the Cornell faculty.

The Kindfuller Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2001 by Andrew and Kenwyn Kindfuller. The Fund provides assistance to a student who might otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School with preference given to an African-American student.

The Joseph LaValley Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in memory of Joseph LaValley, a beloved Pingry history teacher and boys’ basketball coach. The need-based scholarship is awarded to a worthy student who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Robert A. Lawrence, Jr. ’78 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by members of the Pingry Class of 1978 in memory of Robert A. Lawrence, a fellow classmate, who was a victim in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. The Fund provides a need-based scholarship to students in single-parent families who may not otherwise be able to attend The Pingry School.

The Vincent L. Lesneski Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1973 by the Pingry Alumni Association in memory of Pingry’s beloved coach, Vincent Lesneski. The need-based scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who shows sincere interest in athletics.

The Dr. Loreto Lizardo Tuition Assistance Fund was established in 2022 by Dr. Randy Lizardo ’95 and Dr. Therese Lizardo-Escaño ’98 in honor of their mother who provided them with the opportunity to attend The Pingry School. It is awarded to a student of Asian/Asian Pacific Islander descent who is actively involved in the many opportunities and extracurricular activities that Pingry has to offer, while still succeeding academically. In doing so, this individual was able to make a positive impact on the lives of fellow Pingry students.
 

The Macrae Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Douglas Macrae ’77 to help support a worthy scholar-athlete who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Mark D. & Victoria B. McClain Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by John '45 and Virginia McClain. The need-based scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who might otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Dean W. Mathey Tuition Assistance Fund was established in 2017 by long-time friend of Pingry, Dean W. Mathey. This fund assists a student from a historically underrepresented group that has shown a demonstrated record of academic excellence.

The Meta C. Mergott Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to provide need-based assistance to worthy students who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

Established in 2017 by Mr. and Mrs. Stephan F. Newhouse the Fund provides assistance to deserving students who might otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Parker Road SEEDS Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to support SEEDS Scholars, ensuring their ability to attend The Pingry School.

The Neha Pathak ’98 SEEDS Scholarship Endowment Fund, named in honor of Pingry’s first SEEDS student, was established to provide a financial scholarship to one SEEDS student, ensuring his or her ability to attend The Pingry School.

The Pingry Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to provide need-based assistance to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The PSPA Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by The Pingry School Parents’ Association to provide need-based assistance to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Purnell School Tuition Assistance Fund was establishd in 2021. The Fund provides assistance to female students, with preference given to students in grades 9-12, who embody the legacy guidelines of the former Purnell School, founded in 1963 by Lytt and Sis Gould in Pottersville, New Jersey: truthfulness in all relations, consideration of others, and the use of common sense.

The Albert C. Romano Scholarship Endowment Fund for Drama was established in 2018 in honor of Pingry's beloved Drama Department Chair, who retired after three decades of service to the School. The Fund provides financial assistance for Middle or Upper School students who demonstrate an interest in the dramatic arts at Pingry, either during their application process or while attending the School.

The Edward Scott, Jr. Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 1995 by Daniel Markovitz and others in honor of the legacy left by one of Pingry’s beloved coaches, Edward Scott. Throughout his 27 years of coaching track and field, Mr. Scott touched the lives of countless students, supporting each and every one to their greatest potential. The need-based scholarship is awarded to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School. Preference is given to a student who is a track and field athlete and is committed to the sport, regardless of the competitive level that he or she has attained; a minority student; and a student from poorer geographic regions of New Jersey.

The Leon Scully Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to assist deserving Pingry students in need of financial aid, with a preference given to African-American students.

The Mary Veronica Scully Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to assist deserving Pingry student in need of financial aid, with a preference giving to African-American students.

The Scurci Family Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial support to students involved in a variety of scholastic and extracurricular activities who possess a demonstrative willingness to take on leadership roles and who would not otherwise be able to attend Pingry.

The Carol and Park B. Smith ’50 SEEDS Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial support to one SEEDS Scholar, ensuring his or her ability to attend The Pingry School.

The L. Dean Speir Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2000 by Mr. William S. Beinecke ’31 in honor of Mr. L. Dean Speir to provide financial assistance to one or more qualified students who might otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The William Miller Sperry Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 1989 by Mr. and Mrs. William S. Beinecke ’31 in memory of William Miller Sperry. The scholarship provides up to the full tuition for one or more qualified students who require financial assistance.

The E. Laurence Springer Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, named in honor of the former Headmaster, was established to provide financial assistance to deserving students who might otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School

The Henry G. Stifel III Fund was established in 1998 to recognize and honor the recipients of the Henry G. Stifel III Award since its inception in 1984. The Fund, which offers need-based financial aid, is awarded in honor of all Stifel Award recipients to a student who would otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Charlie Stillitano Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Leo Stillitano ’76 and Charlie Stillitano, Jr. ’77 in memory of their father. The Fund provides need-based assistance to students, preferably soccer players, who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Norman B. Tomlinson ’44 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2005 by Mr. Tomlinson. The Fund provides assistance to deserving students who might otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Miles Hodsdon Vernon Foundation Scholarship Fund provides need-based support to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to attend The Pingry School.

The Voldstad Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 to provide need-based financial support to deserving Pingry students.

The Norbert A. Weldon '35 Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 to provide financial assistance to deserving Middle and Upper School students.

The Wilf Family Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to provide financial assistance to a derving student enrolled at the School between Grade 6 and Form VI.

Established in honor of David M. Allan, the award is given to a senior who participated in Pingry's women's athletics programs demonstrating the highest levels of competitiveness and sportsmanship.

The 2024 recipient is Ngozi Nnaeto.

Created by The Apruzzese family in 2015, the Sandy Apruzzese Big Blue Award for Pingry spirit, commitment, and excellence is given in honor of the creator of Big Blue and mother and grandmother of six Pingry graduates, to that student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, superior sportsmanship, unflagging team spirit and a willingness to place the good of the team before personal goals, and has been a model ambassador for Pingry both on and off the field.

The 2024 recipient is Mark Mason.

The award, established by Mr. and Mrs. David C. Babbitt in honor of their son John ’07, is given each year to a Form VI student who most embodies the qualities that exemplified John’s life. Fun-loving, confident, faithful, compassionate, and reliable, John was devoted to his friends and family. He is remembered by many for his love of sports and music and his interest in American and world history.

The 2024 recipient is Alex Payne.

Established in 2008 by Ms. Jane Andrews and Mr. and Mrs. C. Rory Corrigan, this award recognizes the Pingry football player as exemplified by Coach Tom Boyer, and demonstrates strength of character, courage on the field, and devotion to  teammates.

The 2024 recipient is Joshua Woodford.

Established by Peter and Rose Cipriano, this award recognizes a student who competed on Pingry's boys athletic teams and one who competed for Pingry's girls athletic teams and combined the strongest commitment to athletics with the highest academic average.

The 2024 recipients are Delaney Swain and Thomas Yanez.

Given in memory of Tim Cornwall by his friends and teammates, the Cornwall Boys' Soccer Sportsmanship Award is presented to a senior player, who in the opinion of teammates and their class, has exhibited throughout their career the greatest amount of sportsmanship.

The 2023 recipients are Sebastian Sampedro, Leon Ma, and Samuel Hecht.

The DeGryse Prize is given to that student showing the most dedication and accomplishment in the learning of two world languages. Endowed by the Class of 1946 on the occasion of their Fiftieth Reunion in memory of Abel DeGryse, a great teacher for whom language was the key to understanding a country's people and culture.

The 2024 recipient is Samuel Gonzalez.

Awarded annually to that student who has best developed their own unique talent in pottery, most consistently demonstrated the quality of caring and most clearly understood the responsibilities of the craft.

The 2024 recipients are Isabelle Baird, Emily Gao, and Alexandra Rudnik.

Established in 2020 by Mr. Steven Todd Gold ’95, this award is presented annually to a senior who has contributed the most to the varsity boys’ swim team through his dedication, competitiveness, and sportsmanship.

The 2023 recipient is Roman Jones.

Given in memory of Paul R. Leary ‘90 by his classmates and friends, the award is presented to that senior who, like Paul, has exemplified hard work; determination; loyalty to family, friends, and school; generosity of spirit; and the unique gift of endowing each endeavor and relationship with kindness, respect, and a love of life.

The 2024 recipient is Allison Smith.

The MacDonald History Prize is awarded to that senior who demonstrates superior ability in the discipline of history, as well as a sincere interest in the past and in what it tells us about who we are.

The 2024 recipients are Julia Eng and Francesca Zarbin.

This award is presented to two seniors who competed on Pingry's boys and girls fencing teams. The award recognizes fencers who not only excel in the sport, but more importantly, have contributed the most to the team through dedication, spirit, and sharing.

The 2024 recipients are Nikita Kogan and Delaney Swain.

The prize was established in 1936 in memory of Charles Bertram Newton who was Pingry's Head of School from 1920 to 1936 and an alumnus of Princeton. It is awarded yearly to a Pingry graduate who exhibits high personal and academic standards and will enter Princeton. It is a distinct honor to be selected for this scholarship.

The 2024 recipient is Nicholas Meng.

This award recognizes one or more senior members of the Pingry soccer program who, in the opinion of their coaches, have displayed a remarkable level of courage and determination in overcoming personal adversity on and off the field. The award honors those rare individuals who exemplify grit and perseverance when faced with difficulties while also bravery within themselves that allows them to persevere and rise above those circumstances.

The 2024 recipient is Margaret Pew.

The Robotics Prize is given to the senior whose leadership, creativity, and positive attitude promotes sportsmanship and teamwork among members of the Robotics team. The recipient must also demonstrate strong problem solving, project management, and communications skills through their commitment to the Robotics team.

The 2024 recipients are Keira Chen and Laura Liu. 

The Paul H. and Sarah Rouslin Award for Excellence in English recognizes a senior whose love of and fascination with the English language is manifested in both outstanding writing ability and in the appreciation and understanding of literature. The award is named in memory of the parents of Sheila Rouslin Welt, the wife of and mother of Pingry alumni.

The 2024 recipients are Julia Eng and Annabelle Shilling.

Named in memory of Lisa Allan Smith ’83, this award is presented annually to a Pingry senior who will attend Duke University the following year and who represents the qualities of openness, scholarship and friendliness, which characterized Lisa at Pingry and Duke University.

The 2024 recipient is Jada Watson.

The Henry G. Stifel III Award is named for Mr. Stifel, a Pingry lifer who was paralyzed in an automobile accident during his junior year. Established by the Stifel Family in 1984, the award honors “the person who best exemplifies those characteristics exhibited by Henry G. Stifel III ’83 in the aftermath of his accident and spinal injury: courage, endurance, optimism, compassion, and spirit.”

The 2024 recipient is Ryan Zhang '31.

The Subramanian/Gandhi Summer Technology Fellow Fund was established to support students in a hands-on learning experience in technology over the summer, where each year the student will develop tangible problem-solving skills working with experienced technology professionals.

The Gilbert H. Carver ’79 Memorial Fund was established in 2008 by Calvin Carver and other family members to honor the memory of Gibb Carver ’79. The Fund enhances current programs that provide assistance, support, and counseling for all Pingry students, but particularly for those students who may find themselves in need of enhanced assistance as a result of emotional, psychological, physical, personal or family circumstances. In addition, the Fund engages at least one speaker each academic year to address the student body on topics of self-esteem, tolerance, avoidance of illegal drug and alcohol use, and similar issues of particular value to young people. The inaugural speaker was Ms. Judy Shepard, mother of the late Matthew Shepard who was the victim of a violent hate crime in 1998.

Established by Calvin “Chip” Carver ’77 and his wife Anne DeLaney ’79, the Carver/DeLaney Baseball and Field Hockey Fund provides support for the baseball and field hockey athletic programs at The Pingry School.

The John Hanly Lecture Series was established in 1999 on the occasion of former Headmaster John Hanly’s retirement, in recognition of his commitment to teaching students and other members of the school community how to make life’s decisions within an ethical framework. The Fund enables Pingry to bring in a variety of speakers to campus to address the moral and ethical issues facing all of us in the 21st century. Past speakers have included 60 Minutes producer David Gelber ’59, author Lisa See, and Dr. D. James Baker, Director of the Global Carbon Measurement Program of the William J. Clinton Foundation.

Established in 1997 by Mr. and Mrs. Ring in honor of their son, Justin '94, the Justin Society Fund encourages creative writing by inviting writers to the School to read and discuss their works and to work with students. In addition, the Fund provides awards to the students who submit acceptable work with the three top submissions receiving special honors.

The Robert H. LeBow ’58 Memorial Oratorical Prize Fund was established to honor the life and achievements of Dr. Robert H. LeBow ’58 by his classmates. The Fund’s intent is to inspire Pingry students to pursue excellence in public speaking as a leadership and intellectual endeavor. The Fund provides an award to the winner of the annual Robert H. LeBow ’58 Memorial Oratorical Competition which is open to Pingry students in Forms IV and V.

The Mary Jean McLaughlin P’78, ’80, ’83, ’84, GP’12, ’15, ’18 Lecture Series was established in 2023 by Julie and Mark McLaughlin '83 in honor of the teaching legacy of Mary Jean McLaughlin. Mary Jean was a dedicated fourth-grade teacher at Pingry for nearly three decades. Education was her true calling. She loved her students as she did her own children and touched many lives in and out of the classroom. While at Pingry, she served as Chair of Language Arts and vigorously supported two causes near and dear to her heart: a love of her home state of New Jersey and the environment. Mary Jean, through a grant supported by the Pingry Faculty Fellowship, initiated the first Environmental Education Earth Day celebration at the Short Hills Campus on Friday, March 9, 1990.

The Lecture Series enables Pingry's Lower School to welcome a variety of dynamic speakers, including academics, authors, artists, and community practitioners to focus on the human impact on the environment with an emphasis on the state of NJ.
 

The Gary J. Stass Library Fund was created in 1996 by Mr. Stass ’56 and provides funding for the purchase of new books as well as funding for general library purposes.
