Senior Jenna Devine, whose professional goal is to write fiction, has been named a 2008 Presidential Scholar in the Arts. According to the United States Department of Education, she is one of 139 American high school seniors who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, and service at school and in the local community.

The Presidential Scholars will be honored in Washington, D.C., from June 21 to 24, 2008. “That’s one of the really nice things about Presidential Scholars. You get to hang out with other kids who are really dedicated to what they do,” she said. The events in Washington include the chance to perform at The Kennedy Center and a possible visit to The White House. In addition, two of Jenna’s poems will be on display in the National Portrait Gallery, along with works by other Presidential Scholars.

Jenna’s selection as a Presidential Scholar stems from her acceptance, last November, into the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) youngARTS program, which provides support, education, and recognition to high school seniors. NFAA is the only nominating agency for Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

Brittany Waser, Class of 2008, achieved the Gold Medal level of the Congressional Award, a national honor. The Congressional Award recognizes achievement in four areas: volunteer public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition planning.

For the volunteer public service and personal development aspects of the Gold Medal, Brittany focused on volunteering at the Clinton Rescue Squad, where she attended classes and received her EMT certification. As an EMT Cadet she devoted hundreds of hours to riding the ambulance on her Saturday duty nights, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. In addition to aiding patient care, she participated in calls, drills, and continuing education classes, was on standby for athletic events in the community, and helped at the station. “Every call I go on is exciting. Working at the squad has ignited my interest in medicine,” Brittany says.
