A Pingry Education: Value Meets Vision
More than 150 years ago, Dr. John Pingry educated students in a small schoolhouse on Westminster Avenue behind his home in Elizabeth. As the need arose, Dr. Pingry and others managed to raise $10,000 to build a new school on Parker Road. As the school continued to admit more students, blueprints were drawn for a new school, and Pingry moved to another location in Hillside. During the 1960s, Pingry would persevere on its path to academic excellence -- all the while continuing the larger story of a school on the way from a modest local academy to a regional powerhouse. Soon, it was time to move again. School visionaries understood the value of the exceptional education Pingry provided and knew it was critical to not only plan, but to take action. With that goal in mind, a blueprint for the Basking Ridge Campus was rendered and a new facility built. Now, 30 years later and 200 acres of school property to work with, the moving has subsided, but the vision — the blueprint for Pingry’s future — is intact. The school will continue to be shaped by those who care — trustees, administrators, alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends — and whose gifts ensure that the standards set years ago are preserved while the ever-changing needs of the students are anticipated and met.
The Pingry School has embarked on the largest fundraising campaign in its history. After significant research and discussion with many key members of the school community, several critical areas were identified as initiatives that Pingry must pursue over the next few years. These initiatives, identified in Pingry’s Strategic Plan, include: building the endowment for student financial aid; improved athletics facilities, including a new Athletics Center (named in honor of Miller A. Bugliari ’52); modernization of the Lower and Upper Schools to provide improved learning environments; support of faculty development; and support of The Pingry Fund.
