September 9 was a strong start to the 2017 season for the Girls' Varsity Cross Country Team. Nicole Vanasse '20 won the Newark Academy Cross Country Invitational in a time of 19:51, leading the team to a first-place finish overall, 20 points ahead of Villa Walsh. (Last year they placed second; three years ago, they also won.) Teammates Ryan Davi '21 (third, 20:17), Alina Irvine '21 (sixth, 20:35), and Cathleen Parker '19 (12th, 21:32) followed close behind.
Head Coach Tim Grant was impressed with their showing, and optimistic for the season ahead. "The top-five girls had an average time of 20:54," he reported. "We've only had a better average than that a handful of years, and that was accomplished at the end of seasons—seasons during which we won state championships—not at the very beginning."
The team's next big invitational—the Shore Coaches Invitational—will take place on October 7 at Holmdel Park.
Congratulations, girls' cross country!
