Last season's highlights: The 2016-17 Girls' Varsity Tennis Team enjoyed a successful season, led by captains Wesley Streicher '17 and Cece Lesnick '17, who is now playing for Lafayette College. In addition to finishing as co-champions with Ridge in the Somerset County Tournament, they were the Non-Public "A" South Sectional Champions and the Non-Public "A" Group Champions. The team also qualified for the Tournament of Champions, falling to Ridge, 2-3. They posted a 14-3 record, finished second in the Skyland Conference, and were ranked #6 in the NJ.com Top 20.
What to watch for this season:
● The team, led by captains Brooke Murphy '18 and Lindsey Yu '18, will benefit from having two additional seniors return to the varsity lineup—Jessica Li and Avery Schiffman.
● Coach Weber hopes to build on the team's success last year by repeating as sectional and group champions, and, she says, making another trip to the Tournament of Champions would be great! Montgomery and Ridge are expected to be their biggest rivals.
● The team has had a busy preseason, playing challenge matches and working on drills and match-play strategy to prepare for the upcoming season. Their first regular season match will be at home—on Big Blue's 12 new tennis courts—on Thursday, September 7 against Montgomery.
"We have a cohesive group of hard-working players looking to contribute to several common goals this season, and I believe the team will be competitive in meeting them. I hope to encourage team spirit and a sense of unity as we work together."—Head Coach Marion Weber
