Middle School Science 'Olympians' Advance to States

On January 6, led by science teacher Debra Tambor and assisted by math teacher Payal Patel, 22 Middle Schoolers (and two ninth graders) traveled to Union County College to compete in the Science Olympiad Regional Competition. In a field of 22 schools, Pingry students placed 8th, medaling in four out of the 10 events. Thinking caps were snugly fitted, as the events covered disciplines as wide-ranging as biology, chemistry, physics, forensics, engineering, general science, cartology, aeronautics, epidemiology, earth science and more.

In one event, Bridge Building, students were tasked with designing and constructing a bridge to achieve the highest possible structural efficiency (it was tested at the competition). In Write It/Do It, one student wrote a description of an object and how to build it, and her teammate then attempted its construction.

The group recently learned that it will advance to the state-level tournament, to be held at Middlesex County College on March 8.

Congratulations Science Olympians!
