Music Department

Music has long been considered an indispensable part of a well-rounded education. The Music Department at Pingry encompasses the study of vocal and instrumental music as well as the study of music theory. We are able to meet the educational needs of both the experienced musician and the experimental musician by offering individualized and group instruction.

Curriculum in performance courses is designed to give students a wide range of exposure to different musical styles and genres. Students will become familiar with the works of such composers as J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Leonard Bernstein, and Duke Ellington. It is our belief that providing a strong foundation in classic repertoire will not only allow students to experience musical performance with greater understanding but will also encourage exploration of other musical styles and textures.

There is a comprehensive list of programs available to Pingry students: Men and Women's Glee Club, Buttondowns and Balladeers, Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Choir, Boys' Chorus, Girls' Chorus, Middle School Orchestra and Brass Choir, Form II Instrumental Ensemble, Middle School Jazz Ensemble, Pingry Chorus Tenor/Baritones, as well as Advanced Placement Music Theory. Many groups require no musical background, only a commitment to consistent rehearsal and performance attendance. In the department we have professional musicians who specialize in particular instruments, as well as vocal coaches who are available to students who wish to pursue private study. We welcome and encourage all students to explore music as part of their Pingry experience.
