Fine Arts Department

The Fine Arts program at Pingry is designed to foster the development of aesthetic insights and appreciation of the arts on a personal, social, and cultural level. Through wide exposure, critical examination, and age-appropriate curriculum Pingry strives to develop in our students a lasting appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of art in its multitude of expressions. Pingry challenges students while encouraging respect, appreciation, and support for the creative efforts of others within our diverse community. All Pingry students share in the presentation of their artworks in numerous art exhibitions throughout the year. Ongoing constructive discussion with peers and the whole Pingry community are encouraged, giving students support and confidence.

The Lower School art program aims to reinforce each student’s innate creative abilities by offering opportunities for visual awareness and self-expression. Skill development through exposure to art fundamentals encourages children to develop sensory perception, a means for nonverbal communication, and a means for enjoyment. Importance is placed on building self-esteem and self-confidence by encouraging the development of eye-and-hand coordination and motor skills through manipulation of art tools.

The Middle School student is introduced to a wide variety of art media with instruction focused on individual growth and abilities. Cooperative learning skills are also stressed with reinforced through activities in which students have the opportunity to work collectively. Students learn to control and utilize a number of tools, materials, and supplies to create exciting, personal works of art.

Culminating with the Upper School curriculum, the Fine Arts program strives to challenge students to examine their environments in new and different ways, and to further develop creativity through personal expression of their thoughts, ideas and emotions. We seek to foster the development of sophisticated problem-solving skills and we encourage intellectual curiosity by presenting a broad range of visual stimulation and opportunities for the Pingry student within our curriculum.
