Miller Bugliari Memory Book - Page 9 | ||

While not a member of any of Miller’s soccer juggernauts nor a Biology student of his, my entering class of 5th graders had the distinction of being taught, in her first year of teaching, by Miss Budd. We never really caught on to the fact that Bugs was hanging around the classroom at the very end of the Lower School wing but I guess that is due to the fact that every one of us was so smitten by Miss Budd that we never even thought that she might have adult suitors as well. Not exactly sure what year the news became public, maybe our 6th grade year, but we were all crushed! Miller used to do a yearly assembly were he would recount some of the incredible pranks that he and his pals had pulled off and some were even on film. I guess the one I remember the most was when Bugs and Co. “borrowed” some ConEd barriers & signs and set up work digging a hole in a street in NYC. Once they got to a certain depth, they just decamped. We thought these were the absolute funniest stories ever, recounted in Miller’s own uniquely entertaining style. They along with Mr. Duborg’s annual physics show were the highlights of the assembly year. The number of memories from my years after graduation are too numerous to recount but know that I, along with so many other alums of Pingry, am the richer from having spent so many hours in Miller’s presence and are honored to call him teacher, coach and above all friend. Ward Tomlinson ‘75 I knew Miller as a Pingry student from 1962-65. I transferred to Pingry in my junior year – fourth form – in the fall of 1962 from a public junior high school. I took biology with Miller that first year and his class was unlike any other I had ever taken before (or since). He breathed life into biology and brought the same enthusiasm to class that he used so effectively as a legendary soccer coach. Miller is a great teacher and builder of young men and women. Some of my fondest memories of Mr. Bugliari stem from his announcing/commentating during the parade on Rufus Gunther Day. He was able to make an already festive occasion that much more fun. I particularly recall one year, possibly my senior year (I graduated in 1989) where 4 of us were dressed as the band "Kiss"--and as we crossed the stage, in full "heavy metal regalia" trying to do our best impression of hardened rockers, Mr. Bugliari announced us as "The Calico Cats." Took the wind out of our sails a bit, but gave us a good laugh too.

Well, there are so many like the time I arrived at Camp Waganaki (i think i was in 6th grade at the time and in Cabin one) and the first afternoon we all gathered in this playing field, where the flag was, it had a name but I forget it now, and the weight lifting shed was off to the side and there was miller lifting some ungodly weight over his head with only two fingers - we all thought he was a super hero OR Of course the time that i was a junior at Pingry, it was soccer season, and I and two of my good friends were planning on, well, running away and heading west and of course we had to tell Miller before we left. his response, we have a soccer game tomorrow and you can't leave until it's over. Of course we stayed for the game, we won, and we never left....i think he saved my life that time. Mark Biedron ‘70
