Miller Bugliari Memory Book - Page 8 | ||

My name is Woody Weldon class of ‘91. I have two great soccer memories of Coach Bugliari. One of the greatest lessons I took from Coach was about discipline. A mundane but great memory of Coach is when we were out on the practice fields crouching down in an "Athletic Position" -knees bent low and on your toes moving side to side and back to front. It seems so unimportant taken out of context, but that is Coach for you. He was right there with us at age 60 or so doing drills and yelling at us the whole time we were doing them. The second greatest memory I have of Coach is him taking me out of the biggest soccer game of my life due to my nervous energy tripping me up. We were playing against St. Benedicts back when Claudio Renia was a senior before he went on to UVA and then become the captain of the U.S. World Cup team. Coach pulled me out and had Coach McCrea (spelling) do some basic ball skill drills to loosen me up. After about 5 minutes he put me back in where I was playing sweeper with Andy Gotleib at Stopper and Pete Londa in goal. Coach can still to this day speak with amazing detail how we almost pulled off an upset by shutting Claudio down until the last five minutes of the game when Claudio scored by deflecting the ball off his thigh. Although we lost, it was a culminating moment in many of our athletic careers on that soccer team. There are many other memories, but those two always stand out for me. Sincerely, Woody Weldon ‘91 I am Bart Zanelli, class of 1980 and remember Miller well. the one memory that sticks in my mind the most is when as a ninth grader I got admitted to Pingry. Now my grandmother, who passed away recently at the age of 101, was, unbeknownst to me friends through some Italian-American organization with Miller's mother. Upon hearing of me attending Pingry the first thing she asked me was "how is little Miller doing, I hear he is still there" the thought of calling Mr.. Bulguari "little Miller" was hilarious much less explaining that he was still at Pingry but now as a teacher and coach, not a student

Two brief strong recollections from Miller teaching bio. I will always remember biology with Miller because he constantly sang “Urea” to the tune of “Maria” from West Side Story. You could hear him bellowing it out half way across the school. I’m not sure Miller knew any of the words from Maria besides the word Maria, so his Urea song was blessedly brief. Perhaps he would be willing to sing Urea once more, and have it recorded and put on the web page. One of Miller’s great virtues is his self-deprecating sense of humor. At times we got sick of biology, of course, as we tried to memorize all the parts of a flower, or stages of cellular mitosis. Our class decided to starting changing “Boo Bio”. Of course, Miller picked that up as his theme, so we he too would start chanting “Boo Bio” as he would hand out tests and the like. Instead of taking it as an insult, he could just commiserate with us, and we knew he was the type of teacher who would not take too much offense. It was amazing how that made him one of us, and vice-versa. Bruce Jacobsen ‘78
