Kevin Briody – Class of 1973 The Challenge It was the summer of my senior year – August 1972. Preseason practice at the Hillside campus in the sweltering heat and the team was coming off an excellent season the prior year but had lost the bulk of its starters. After one particularly upsetting practice (to the Coach) – Robbie Kurz suffered an uncontrollable fit of dribbling; Rich O’Connor arrived late due to a “project” with a Vail Dean student; and for the final straw, our trainer ran out of lifesavers – Coach B, in some choice words, told us we were one of the weakest teams he had coached and that we would be lucky if we finished with a .500 record (that’s the polite version). The challenge worked as those words struck to our core and we felt an incredible motivation that carried us through the season. We still remember that speech and until this day talk about proving the Coach wrong - the team went on to a 16-1-1 record, state championship and the Pingry Hall of Fame | ||
I had a very enjoyable visit with Miller Bugliari following the game on a homecoming Saturday in October 2004. During the post-game team meeting on the field he graciously introduced me to the team and individually to the co-captains, manager, and assistants. We chatted for a short time in his office. When he learned that I had not seen the Hall of Fame plaques in the gymnasium, he was kind enough to walk me up and show them to me, one of which honors the undefeated team on which my brother Ray and I played for Pingry in 1962. Unfortunately, I did not catch any of the Pingry soccer action in 2005. I hope it was a successful season. Congratulations to coach Bugliari. I’m sure the awards banquet will be memorable.
