A team of four Pingry Grade 5 students recently participated in the New Jersey Stock Market Game, finishing first in the game’s elementary school division. The educational game is sponsored by the N.J. Council on Economic Education and is designed to teach students about stock markets, the American economic system, and the global economy. Under the game rules, each team invests a hypothetical $100,000 in a portfolio of stocks and mutual funds over a 10-week period. During that time, students can research stocks and enter trades at end-of-day prices.
The four winners from PingryMatthew Dannenbaum, Clayton McCollum, Charles Muller, and Clayton Wrightmade more than a 22 percent profit on their investments. The students participated in the game as a classroom project for Bob Smith’s math class after first learning about fundamental economics and strategies for investing. The other students in Mr. Smith’s class participated as well in teams consisting of three or four students each.
