Grade 6 Students Raise Money for GLP in a Unique Way
May 16, 2008

Instead of receiving presents for their birthdays, eight Grade 6 students recently decided to use the occasion to give a collective gift to the Global Literacy Project (GLP).

Drew Topor, Camille Vanasse, Nikky Zezza, Lizzie Abbott, Morgan Wahby, Haley LaFontaine, Mikaela Lewis, and Kyle Casey asked their families and other Grade 6 families to make donations to GLP. To show their support, the families raised $5,000. On May 7, 2008, the students presented a ceremonial check to Dr. Emeka Akaezuwa, a GLP board member from Nigeria.

“To honor their leadership, we are proud to have these girls standing before us to recognize their efforts and the efforts of Grade 6,” said Middle School history teacher Mark Facciani.

On May 14, the Middle School raised an additional $2,730.25 for GLP when students threw pies at their teachers at a cost of five dollars per pie.

These donations are part of Pingry’s continuing collaboration with GLP, which began in the summer of 2007 when students, faculty, and staff visited South Africa to help build a library with books donated by the Pingry Community.
