Fifth and sixth grade students joined the New Jersey Opera Theater on May 18, 2007 to perform an abridged version of Carmen, the famed opera of love, loss, and gypsy spells by Bizet. Known for its theme songs, “The Habañera” and “Toreador,” Carmen delighted the Lower School students, who watched at the Short Hills Campus as approximately 20 of their peers either successfully acted in the background or delivered speaking roles. Mrs. Jean Knee and music teacher Mr. Tom Berdos organized the event to introduce opera to the Short Hills students. So far, the art has been well received, with Jessica McGregor, grade 6 student and one of the performers, describing it as “an overall fun experience.”
