History is among the many subjects studied each day by Pingry students. However, on Friday, March 30, 2007, Pingry second grade students took time to focus on “her-story” by celebrating women’s history. Bringing to light the achievements of famed female historical figures, the students presented their brief biographies during an assembly at the Short Hills Campus.
From Pocahontas and Marie Curie to Oprah Winfrey and Susan B. Anthony, a diverse group of women were highlighted. Each leading lady was represented by a model that the boys and girls created out of a Styrofoam ball and dishwashing detergent bottle. Some students even passed as mini doppelgangers of the women they researched by dressing in their signature apparel.
To conclude the celebration, the fourth graders used their studies of sign language to help the second graders fittingly sing and sign the words to “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face” by Shania Twain. Jill Driscoll and Sally Springmeyer, Pingry second grade teachers and the event’s organizers, believe that the students went above and beyond expectations, but it is not just the overall assignment that was commendable, for the pride and joy each student felt about their work was palpable.
