Sixth Grade Gives Mother Nature a Hand
April 15, 2005

The long-term beautification project for the new courtyard at the Short Hills campus was formally opened and dedicated on April 13, 2005. The courtyard, located outside of the cafeteria and the library, was festooned with hundreds of bright yellow daffodils all planted by the class of 2011—this year’s sixth graders.

In the fall of 2004, the sixth grade began planting hundreds of daffodil bulbs around the courtyard. In Mr. Veslage’s science class, they studied botany, which allowed them to understand the lifecycle of the seed bulb. After spending countless hours planting the flowers with help from Mr. Anthony Gagliardi of the maintenance staff, the wait began.

On April 13, the entire school gathered in the courtyard for the dedication of the daffodils. The courtyard was surrounded by hundreds of plants in full bloom, all a brilliant yellow set off by a sparkling, clear blue sky. A sixth-grade student thanked Mr. Corvino, assistant headmaster and Lower School director; the PSPA; Mr. Gagliardi; and Mr. Veslage for their help and support during the project. A plaque, inscribed with, Daffodil Garden donated by the class of 2011, The Pingry School, will be installed on the outside library wall. The project, which is a gift to the school by this year’s “graduating” class, is a gift that will be sustained for many years and will serve as a constant reminder of the beauty of spring.
