Students Travel to the Center of American History
March 25, 2004

On February 28th to March 1st, 59 Form IV students trod the path of history forged 250 years ago in Williamsburg, Virginia. With several stops along the way to enjoy both history and history in the making, the students and their six chaperones enjoyed many memorable moments.

On the way to Virginia, the group stopped at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD for a quick tour of one of the eastern seaboard’s most colorful seaports. Then on to Norfolk, VA, where the group danced the night away on a dinner cruise.

Among the several tours the students took, perhaps the most unusual was the nighttime candlelight tour of Williamsburg. This was most authentic as the students and chaperones walked the streets as they were before the advent of bright, electric streetlights. The group also toured the replica of the Jamestown settlement, enjoyed a reenactment of a revolutionary encampment at Yorktown, and saw the spot where George Washington formally resigned his military post at Annapolis.

According to the students, it was a great trip; a time to relax and enjoy one another and get to know the teachers/chaperones outside of the academic setting. The fact that they were immersed in the history of this country and were exposed to the triumphs and hardships of the forefathers (and foremothers) helped them understand why the lessons they are required to learn are so important. In addition to the renewed sense of history, it was great fun to get away and cultivate new friendships as well as reestablish some old ones.
