Lower School Celebrates Famous Women
March 28, 2003

During a month-long project commemorating Women’s History Month, second-grade students from Ms. Mauro’s and Ms. Springmeyer’s classes researched famous women, created dolls, and presented their findings at an all-school assembly on March 28, 2003.

The students had learned about biographies during February’s Black History Month. They applied this knowledge to researching famous women by choosing a person they would most like to learn about or with whom they shared something in common. The second graders then created an outline for their research and began constructing their dolls from dishwashing liquid containers, Styrofoam balls, and bits and pieces of material. They began practicing their speeches and fine tuning their public speaking skills.

On the morning of March 28, playing to a packed house, the students brought their dolls forward two at a time and spoke about their favorite famous woman. The list was quite impressive and covered women in politics, sports, medicine, science, the arts, and entertainment.

Lisa, a student in Ms. Mauro’s class said she chose Jane Goodall as her famous woman because she likes chimps. “My sister wants a chimp for a pet,” Lisa says, “and I think it would be fun to have one too.” Her research on Jane Goodall taught her that chimps are fun, but very messy.

This day was also a dress-down day, with all donations going to the Jersey Battered Women’s Shelter.
